WHAT YOUR CHILD SAYS AND WHAT IT ACTUALLY MEANS

Most often than not children do not report symptoms that could indicate learning related vision problem. These children end up being labelled as lazy, learning disabled, clumsy, dyslexic or having attention deficit disorder (ADD) and so forth!!!!!

Parents and teachers play a major role in identifying children with learning related vision problems. Reading, spelling, writing and computer work are among the tasks students tackle all day long day after day. Students must also have a variety of scanning, focusing and visual coordination skills for learning and understanding. If these visual skills have not been developed or poorly developed learning becomes difficult and stressful.

Signs of vision problems in children

  • Holding a book very close (7 or 8 inches away)
  • Turning head to use only one eye
  • Covering or closing one eye while reading
  • Squinting for either near or far visual tasks
  • Moving head back and forth, rather than eyes, while reading
  • Omitting letters, words or phrases
  • Complains of seeing double or of blurred vision
  • Writing which is difficult to read, is crowded or inconsistent in size

By comprehensive evaluation by a qualified Optometrist most of the symptoms could be relieved successfully. Treatment involves prescribing special stress relieving glasses, eye exercises and or home vision therapy. These treatments require periodic monitoring for a specified time period and upon successful completion of the therapy eyes function comfortably and efficiently as a team. Most of the symptoms are eliminated or significantly reduced. Near vision task performance will become an enjoyable experience for both the child and adult.
